Upcycled, Repurposed Lamp and Lighting Ideas with A Dose of DIY
Hi Everyone… Are you ready for another “Dose of DIY” ? This month, A Dose of DIY is sharing ideas on lamps and lighting. Last month we shared our pillow ideas…hope you enjoyed it as much as we did putting it together for you!
Today I will be sharing how one light fixture was Upcycled using a metal candle stick holder, the second one receiving a complete makeover. Both lamps also received a new updated wire basket lamp shade. Be sure to check out the other great ideas the others have to share at the bottom of this post. I’m sure you will find something you will love and be inspired by.
Table Lamp Makeover
On the left is what the lamp use to look like before. It was found at the thrift store and didn’t come with a shade, to create a shade a trash basket from the dollar store was transformed into a lampshade and a garland of berries were added to the bottom to pull in all the color of my daughters room. When my daughter expressed she no longer wanted this lamp in her room I was happy to take it off her hands and Upcycle it for the family room. Perfect timing since this month is all about lighting.
For the makeover the entire table lamp and shade was sprayed white, once it was dry, some leftover material, ( I used to recover my kitchen chairs) was used and wrapped to the middle pole of the lamp. See the picture on right with the blue and white jar, can you see where I am going with this new design? Don’t you just love navy blue and white together? By adding the material it mimics the design of the jar, while applying navy blue paint to different parts of the lamp shares the same colors and coordinates with the rest of the blue and white pieces on the sofa table vignette.
I know this is a bit long, but once this lamp was completed, my creative juices started flowing and I couldn’t help but keep going. See the metal candle stick on the right that has a candle wrapped with the same material as the lamp? Well I have 2 of these metal candle sticks….here is what I did with the other one.
This wire basket lampshade was originally made for above counter lighting, however with my ever changing decor it hasn’t been used for some time, until now. OK back to the candle stick lighting. The lamp shade and candle stick were both given a coat of white spray paint.
The basket was then wrapped with material at the top and bottom along with the handles. It was then placed on top of the candle stick using and bending out the metal petals of the candlestick votive giving it a place to hold the wire basket in place.
If you happened to go to the tutorial on how the pendant lighting was created you can see the cord would pose a problem…meaning it would be exposed and dangle down over the candle stick. To solve this problem area the cord was wrapped with the matching material and brought down the candlestick, and to hold it in place pieces of material were wrapped around the desired parts of the candle stick I wanted to accent as well as holding the covered cord in place.

This has nothing to do with the lighting but I love this little hand print trivet my daughter made me in grade school… I have changed this ribbon out many times and this time it was changed out with the same material in the lamp.
