How Bella helped with Depression
Man's Best Friend? How about a cure for a Man's Depression?
It is said a dog is mans best friend, not only is she my man's best friend she is a cure for depression.
I wouldn't have believed it if I had not witnessed it myself.
I have heard that animals are good for the elderly and for a person with health issues, but never had thought it would help with depression.
Well this little beauty did just that!
Meet Bella our new addition to the family

Many of you probably don't know this and it's really not something I would normally share.
But I feel that if this helps anyone that suffers from depression that reads this blog and it helps just one person it was all worth sharing. By all means I am not a doctor and I am not suggesting anything, but
I wouldn't have believed it if I had not witnessed it myself.
Mr. OMT was hurt at work 3 years ago, he has yet received the treatment he should have. Three doctors have recommended surgery and because of the insurance not complying to his medical needs during this time, he not only deals with pain every day but because of the delay in medical help he deals with stress and depression.
Until Christmas this year.
My daughter surprised him with the dog of his dreams! A Chocolate Lab, Bella was rescued from a local shelter and she is a real good dog, We keep saying who would get rid of such a good dog?
Well I am happy they did because I haven't seen my husband smile like he did the day she came home and he is still smiling!
There were days I would go to work and worry what kind of day Mr. OMT would have, now I don't have to worry about that anymore. I know just what kind of day he will be havimg. It was love at first sight and they are inseparable. Bella has helped his stress and has improved his mood. He still has a lot of pain, but Bella is just "what the doctor ordered" to reduce his stress and depression.

This is Winnie, my dog she is the sweetest and as you can see by all the gray she's getting up in age, we had a little scare with her just before Christmas. With all that Mr. OMT is going through I was afraid of how that may affect him if something should happen to her. So when my daughter asked if she could he Mr. OMT a dog I agreed. Winnie is doing fine now and has a new best friend too. Makes me wonder if Bella has influenced her too.

Research has found that owning a dog can lower blood pressure, reduce stress hormones, and boost levels of feel-good chemicals in the brain and she has brought that "feel-good" to Mr.OMT.

Here are our girls. Bella just fit in perfectly and has brought a lot of happiness to our home and most of all to Mr. OMT!
Thanks for letting me share my story.

Well, you know that God brought that sweet dog right into your life because He knew you needed him and he needed you. I have a family member that suffers from depression, too. It is a horrible thing to watch and people that are not affected by it have no idea what it is like. Blessings to you and your hubby and I hope things are better in 2013. xo Diana
ReplyDeleteThanks Diana and yes you are right!
ReplyDeleteSuch a sweet post! Thanks for sharing. I deal with depression, also, and have always been a 'dog' person. But after moving to AZ and living in apartments, I couldn't even begin to imagine having to pick up their (excuse the expression) poop, every time they went out! Ended up on medication. THEN.....I got a cat. For me, she did the job a dog would do! Bottom line, God does know, and that's why he gave us pets!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Had a black lab mix once, best dog EVER. Can't beat a lab.
What a beautiful post Tammy! Thank you for sharing! I do agree that animals are wonderful companions and good for the soul too! Your babies are beautiful!

ReplyDeleteI agree animals can add so much & become part of the family. We got a rescue kitten not too long ago (he is now 4 mo) Unfortunately pre holidays we lost our dog of 10yr. it was hard for us & unexpected. We are waiting a while before we get another dog. Found you via Google+ hop drop by anytime. & I love your coffee station btw. You can find me @ DearCreatives.com
